Here we are, week 4.  I miss all of you dearly.  Hoping that everyone is staying safe and healthy and making the best of the circumstances.  As part of the activity card this week Mr. Mac issued a 12 nail challenge.  You may be wondering if you can actually balance 11 nails on the head of a nail.  In fact, you can!  Mr. Mac will post a picture on the DRHS website near the end of the week.  Until then, expect to get another phone call this week for a quick chat.

Hi all,

Here is the bingo card for week 3.  You'll find a bunch of new activities to do at home!  Mr. MacCurdy didn't make some phone calls to you this week because he is suffering from a hoarse voice but I will be in touch soon.  Stay safe and stay healthy!

The answer to last week's problem of the week was the line BE = sqrt 32.

Enjoy this week's problem based on divisibility.  Remember, there are more than one solution to the problem.

Mind games - Kenken

Take boredom to task and strengthen your operational abilities (multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction) in math.  In the game of kenken you must have the same all of the numbers in each row and column.  Start with a 3 x 3 puzzle.  Inside of the larger square there are shapes with numbers and operation signs next to them.  For example, if it say 2 - I must put two numbers inside that shape that subtract to make 2.  If you are doing the 3 x 3 square, only 3 and 1 will work.  These are challenging and maybe a wee bit addictive but most importantly they are great practice for your personal number calculator (your brain)...lol.  Have fun!

Mind games - Sudoku

Make boredom a thing of the past.  With sudokus you can challenge yourself each day to get a better time, compete against a family lmember, or simply relax with a numbers game.  There are three levels of difficulty that you can try.  Remember every column, row, and square have to have the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.

I trust and hope that everyone is doing well.  We have an updated activity card for everyone to follow again this week.  Try to do one or two activities a day along with 30 min of reading and 30 min of physical activity.  Happy Easter!

Each week Mr. MacCurdy will post a math word problem for Grades 7 and 8.  These problems come from the University of Waterloo.  Take your time and try to solve.  Mr. Mac will post the solution at the end of each week.

Khan Academy Math

Khan Academy is free to register to both parents and learners.  It is especially great as a math resource as it covers k - 12 grade levels.  Although an American resource, the curriculum shared on the website is very similar to ours in NB.  The program has excellent tutorial videos that the students can watch and is then followed by immediate feedback questions to test their understanding.  It's a great resource that allows students and parents to work on material together as they progress through videos an practice questions on specific content.
