Hey! I hope you are all well. This week you are still working on the Twelve Angry Men assignment that I posted last week.  If you don't have the information then check last week's post.  I wish we were in class to read this together. Generally the students have enjoyed reading this play together. It touches on some important themes such as racism, justice, and standing up for what you believe in...themes still relevant in society today. You have this week and next week to finish the assignment. If you are reading the play, I would love to hear from you. If there is interest maybe we could do a small group online discussion about it. Let me know if that is something you are interested in.

Hello English 9 students. Please find attached a reading comprehension that includes a text called "The War of the Wall". It has some reading comprehension questions and discussion questions you can answer in a paragraph format. You can also find it on commonlit.org, log in and use YN87DK as the code to join the class. For students who are struggling or are on a learning plan, there is an option to have the text read to you using the commonlit.org website.

A reminder that you should also be reading 30 minutes every day and participating in 30 minutes of physical activity. We hope you and your families are well. Mrs. Talbot and I miss. you! Stay well!

***I'VE ADDED TWO ATTACHMENTS WHICH INCLUDE SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR WRITING A LITERARY ANALYSIS AND A TEMPLATE FOR WRITING AN ANALYSIS.

Here are the instructions for your assignment that is due on Friday:

Unit Assignment #2 Novel Unit and Analysis Writing – Due May 8th
Read a novel. You can choose what book you want to read. As you are reading, take notes about character, setting, theme, plot and point of view. You can either send me your notes in a Word document, or if you write them, you can take a picture of them and message them to me. When you are finished the novel write a 2-3 page analysis on one of the elements listed.
• In your introduction you should include the author’s name, the title of the novel, a short summary and a thesis statement that explains what you are going to write about.
• In your body paragraphs you should use examples from the novel to explain the thesis statement. Include a topic sentence (first sentence in the body paragraph), several examples and a concluding sentence)
• In your conclusion include a re-wording of the thesis statement, how the novel can teach the reader a lesson, and connect it to the world or another book, or social issue.
Some example thesis statements:
1. In the novel the theme of _____________ is shown by __________, ____________ and ________________.
2. The character named John Smith is portrayed as being character trait and character trait and teaches the reader that lesson learned.

Expectations (reminder, no marks will be given. Use this to self-assess)
Learning Target #2 – Story Elements
Student makes notes on: character, setting, plot, point of view and theme.

One main idea, sufficient supporting evidence
Learning Target 9b - Organization
Follows instructions for body, paragraphs, conclusion

Writing is formal (no contractions or slang)
Learning Target 9d – Word Choice
Word choice is grade level appropriate
Learning Target 9e – Sentence Structure
Variety of sentence lengths. Sentences flow.
Learning Target 9f – Spelling/Grammar
Very few spelling and grammar errors (use spell check)

English 112 - The assignment this week is due on May 16th. You will read Twelve Angry Men and answer the questions. I have provided the script, the questions and a Power Point of notes in the attachments. The play is about a jury that is deciding the fate of a young man who is convicted of murder. If you want feedback on any of your work you can send me the answers to the questions and I will send you back some feedback.

You are going to read "How to Identify and Manage Emotions" and "Help-Giving" and answer the questions that go with them. English Language Arts Grade 9 Week of April 27, 2020

 

Hello Grade 9s.  Here is your home learning work for this week:

Reading –

You can find the readings in the attachment, or you can go to:  www.commonlit.org/en/enroll and enter the code: YN87DK

 

1.    You will read an article titled “Five Reasons Why Being Kind Makes You Feel Good.”  Then answer the questions following the text.

2.    You will read an article titled “After the Rain”. Then answer the questions following the text.

 

Writing

1.    In response to the reading that you did titled, “Five Reasons Why Being Kind Makes You Feel Good”, do an act of kindness for someone (a friend, a family member, a neighbor – maintain social distancing). Then write a journal entry to explain how being kind makes you feel.

2.    In response to the poem you read, titled “After the Rain” write a poem about things you notice about spring.  Try to use as many of the 5 senses as you can in describing spring.

Please try to read for 30 minutes each day and try to get 30 minutes of physical activity daily as well. Take care of yourselves! We miss you!
